CARBONEAR, N.L. —

At this stage, the Town of Carbonear is hopeful the expansion of the Princess Sheila NaGeira Theatre could be finished before the end of this year.

The deadline came, and went, on June 20 for the design work request for proposals, with the town receiving two submissions. At the Tuesday, June 25 council meeting, town CAO Cynthia Davis said those submissions still needed further review to ensure they were in accordance with the evaluation plan for the project, which involves the construction of a multi-purpose space accessing the back of the theatre's stage.

The town is hoping the consultant's work will be finished in August.

"We're hoping that the tender could be done before the end of August so that we could have someone start (construction) towards the end of August," she said, adding the work should not interfere with any planned activities or events at the theatre.

The town estimates it will be a four-month job. Davis said once the shell of the expansion is finished, work should continue into the colder months of November and December without any issue.

"So hopefully it will be done before the end of 2019," she said.

Federal and provincial funding for the theatre expansion was announced in the spring, with the total budgeted cost of the project just over $813,000. The town is covering about 10 per cent of that amount. It's expected the expansion will allow the theatre to accommodate larger productions. The theatre in its present state has almost no backstage area.
