Newfoundland and Labrador teams 1-1 at national curling club championships

Event is being held concurrently with Canada Cup in Leduc, Alta.

Brad Gushue doesn’t have the only team out of Newfoundland at a major curling competition in Leduc, Alta., this week.

The Canadian club curling championships are also being held in the community south of Edmonton.

While the Canada Cup’s 14 rinks, including Gushue, will curl at the Sobeys Area, the club championships are being conducted at the adjoining Leduc Curling Club.

A team skipped by Rob Feltham out of Gander and including Scott Davidge, Kris MacLeod and Baxter House is representing Newfoundland and Labrador on the men’s side. In the women’s division, the province’s team is one out Corner Brook that includes Susan Curtis, Donna Davis, Kathryn Miles and Carolyn Colbourne.

Both N.L. rinks  had 1-1 records after Tuesday’s draws.

The national club championship (formerly known as the Travelers Championship), is considered a second-tier event, since each team is allowed only one player who has played in a provincial or territorial junior, men’s, women’s or seniors championship in the last four curling seasons and/or present curling season, or participated in a full-field Grand Slam event in the current or previous four curling seasons.

As well, no player on the teams can have played in a national junior, men’s, women’s or seniors national championship in the current or previous four seasons.
